COMPLIMENTARY WEBINAR

Navigating the politics of media interactions

Wednesday 11 December at 2pm AEDT

PLEASE NOTE: This topic replaced our previously advertised webinar on communicating with young people, as our guest speaker has had to withdraw. We hope you can still join us!

Who speaks to the media on behalf of your Council?

Your media policy probably specifies your Mayor is your spokesperson – but what happens when other Councillors make public comment on issues and decisions, especially when they disagree with the majority?

This is a contentious topic in many councils, sometimes leading to serious division between elected members and reputation damage for the organisation.

As communication professionals, we have little control over the media interactions of Councillors. However, we have a strong stake in this issue and need to be clear on the rules and our own responsibilities.

By attending this webinar, you’ll take away:

  • Clarity and insights about the role of your Councillors in relation to the media
  • Best-practice media policies and how to apply them in a realistic way
  • Strategies for navigating situations where Councillors air their differing views in the media
